Homestead Exemption – An Important Way to Reduce Your Property Taxes

Happy New Year!  If you bought a home in 2011, congratulations!  You can now start to reap some of the benefits of owning your own home.  One of those benefits is taking advantage of the tax benefits that come with home ownership.  An important step in reducing your property taxes is to claim a Homestead Exemption.  This will reduce your property taxes, resulting in a considerable savings for you.

Georgia homeowners can claim a Homestead Exemption if they occupied the home on or before January 1, 2012.  To claim the benefit, you MUST file for Homestead Exemption with the tax office of the county where you reside.  However, the deadlines and filing requirements vary by county, so you need to check with the county where you purchased your home.  You only need to file once; the benefit remains with you, the property owner, as long as the property is your primary residence. We have included links to area county websites, but if you have any questions, feel free to contact us.

We wish you a happy and prosperous 2012!
